Fitness for registration
Ko te tōtika kia rēhitatia
If you’re applying to register with the Pharmacy Council for the first time, we must ensure you’re fit for registration. It’s a requirement of the HPCA Act 2003.

Disclose anything that may affect your fitness to register

In your application, you must tell us about any matter that could affect your fitness for registration. We list below specific disclosures the HPCA Act requires. But if there’s anything outside these topics that could affect your fitness to register, you must disclose it as well.

We will treat your information in strict confidence.

We will consider your information, following the Act’s requirements, to confirm you’re fit to register.

Our team will aim to support you, so you can practise safely and maintain public safety.

English language communication — you must communicate clearly

You must be able to speak and understand English effectively so you can:

  • practise within the appropriate scope(s) of practice
  • protect the public’s health and safety.

If we’re notified that you’re not communicating in English to an acceptable standard, we may ask you improve your language skills.

English language communication falls under Sections 16 (a) and (b) of the HPCA Act.

Convictions — you must tell us if you’ve been convicted

If you’ve been convicted of an offence in any court — in New Zealand or elsewhere — please send a copy of your conviction history to support your application.

Disclosing convictions falls under Section 16 (c) of the HPCA Act.

Convictions you don’t need to disclose
The Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004 applies. You do not need to disclose any convictions or offences that meet these four criteria.

  • They occurred 7 or more years ago.
  • You haven’t re-offended.
  • The conviction or offence was not a specified offence under the Clean Slate Act.
  • The conviction didn’t result in prison or corrective training.

Mental and physical conditions — you must tell us about any health conditions

You must tell us if you have any mental or physical health condition that may affect your fitness to register and practise. We need the following information.

  • Details of the illness
  • Duration of treatment
  • Name and contact details of the practitioner who is treating you.

Disclosing health conditions falls under Section 16 (d) of the HPCA Act.

Professional conduct — you must tell us about any disciplinary actions

You must tell us if you have ever been the subject of an investigation or disciplinary action by:

  • an employer, licensing body, or professional organisation
  • the Health and Disability Commissioner or a similar consumer protection body
  • an educational institution.

If a disciplinary action or investigation involved or led to a professional disciplinary proceeding, in New Zealand or elsewhere, we need you to give us details.

Disclosing disciplinary actions falls under Sections 16 (e), (f), and (g) of the HPCA Act.
